And another new week begins!

May 11, 2026

Today is
World Ego Awareness Day

Held annually on May 11 since 2018, Ego Awareness Day encourages self-reflection on the dangers of inflated egoism. It promotes humility, aiming to reduce toxic behaviors, conflicts, and misunderstandings in personal and social interactions. The day promotes a "conscious pause" to evaluate how ego influences behavior.

"Anytime we are worrying more than trusting God, we are valuing the ego's plan for our life over God's plan for us." — Unknown

Episcopal and Anglican-affiliated authors often analyze the ego as a "false self" or an obstacle to divine union and compassion, emphasizing the need for it to be surrendered or "died to" daily. Key perspectives focus on shifting from ego-centeredness to a God-centered life, with figures like Alan Watts and John Sanford integrating psychology with theology to address this transformation.

Episcopal Authors and Perspectives

  • Alan Watts: An Episcopal priest (later leaving the ministry) who wrote extensively on the "false self" in Ego: The Essence of Alan Watts,  arguing that we mistakenly define ourselves by a limited ego image rather than our true nature.
  • John A. Sanford: An Episcopal priest and Jungian analyst who, in The Kingdom Within, draws on Fritz Künkel to define evil as arising from human ego-centricity rather than within God.
  • Barbara Brown Taylor: An Episcopal priest and author who explores finding the sacred in the ordinary, implicitly countering the ego's demand for specialness or "high" spiritual experiences.
  • Richard Rohr (Franciscan, often read in Episcopal circles): Highlights the distinction between the false self (ego-centered) and the true self (compassion-centered), often cited for his work on dismantling the ego.
