The Mary Month of May

The dedication of May as the month of Mary evolved from ancient pagan spring fertility festivals, such as Roman celebrations of Flora (goddess of blooms), into a Catholic tradition that Christianized these celebrations. Starting around the 13th century, the Church linked the spring renewal of life to Mary, who brought new life to the world through Jesus, ultimately cementing May as a month for honoring her, often featuring May crownings, processions, and the Rosary.

Mary’s "Yes" (her Fiat) is considered a profound, courageous act of faith and total surrender to God's will, acting as the pivotal moment that allowed the Incarnation to occur. It is often described as the reversal of Eve's disobedience, marking her as the "New Eve" who brought salvation into the world.

Episcopalians revere Mary as the "Theotokos" (Mother of God) and the highest example of sainthood. While she is honored as a model of obedience and faith, personal belief regarding her (such as the Assumption) varies, often following the approach: "all may, some should, none must."
