And another new week begins!
August 17, 2026
Today is National Non-Profit Day
National Nonprofit Day celebrates the impact of charitable organizations and the people behind them. The date marks the 1894 signing of the Tariff Act, which first exempted nonprofit corporations from federal income tax and honors the staff, volunteers, and donors who help communities.
There are three St. Nicholas Parishioners who have made a considerable impact in supporting local non-profits via The Episcopal Charities of Southeast Florida. In 2000, a $2.9 million bequest was left to the foundation by Blair and Agnes Smith, long-time members of St. Nicholas Episcopal Church. The bequest was to be used to support feeding, clothing, shelter and healthcare needs of youth and elderly persons. In 2011 Jean Stubbs, another member of our St. Nicholas family, generously provided for Episcopal Charities as well as several other non-profit organizations. And our own Holy Grill Mobile Feeding Ministry is a beneficiary of the Charity’s grant program each year.

Combined with the Diocesan Human Needs Fund, it is now known as the Basic Human Needs Fund. To date, over $3.5 million has been granted to parish-sponsored outreach programs through these funding sources.
