And we were there when it began ...
Episcopal and broader Christian involvement in Labor Day stems from the late 19th-century Social Gospel movement, when church leaders began connecting economic justice and workers' rights to Christian duty.
Early Episcopal Advocacy
- Pulpit and Public Action: Pro-labor members of CAIL preached from pulpits, wrote essays, and organized public forums linking fair wages and safe working conditions to Christian imperatives.
- Broader Movement: Alongside Congregationalists and Methodists, Episcopal leaders pushed back against exploitative 19th-century industrial conditions, child labor, and unsafe sweatshops.
President Grover Cleveland signed a law on June 28, 1894, making the first Monday in September a legal national holiday.

The Red, White and Blue Flowers
adorning the Altar yesterday were given to
the glory of God and in memory of all who died
and all who ministered to the victims of the
September 11, 2001 attack on the
World Trade Center, especially
Fr. Don Milligan. We will never forget!
This coming Friday marks the 25th Anniversary of the tragic attack on the World Trade Center. One of our own acted as chaplain in those weeks that followed, Fr. Don Milligan. Though modest and humble, he would be willing to share those tales in a small setting.
Thank you, Fr. Don for your most difficult and distinguished ministry.
